A RENDEZVOUS WITH GREAT HIMALAYAS – KEDARNATH SHARNAM GACHHAMI

Kedarnath temple

Kedarnath temple is an ancient sacred place for Hindus. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Kedarnath is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga! The surreal landscape vouches for an enthralling trekking experience through the magnanimity of the Himalayas situated in Rudraprayag District of Uttrakhand, it rises 3,581 meters above the sea level.

The route to Kedarnath is not too difficult, but reaching the main temple involves 21 km(new route) of trekking which made us tired. Breathtaking view of rivers, snow-clad mountains, forests, and steep cliffs, Kedarnath is surely a sight for sore eyes.

Where to start your journey

The journey starts from Sonprayag, we hired a taxi to reach Gaurikund. Gaurikund is the starting point of trekking, beautiful river Mandakini flows parallel. We started our trek around 10 AM. It took us approx 8 hours to complete the track. Flanked by snow-clad peaks on all sides, Kedarnath offers a unique traveling experience for those who intend to explore it. Kedarnath is bestowed with some of the wonderful vistas of nature.

We reached base camp by 6 PM and checked in our hotel at GMVN Swargrohini. Trekking was pretty difficult, but the aura was so spiritual that naturally, a person would forget all the worries that burdened them. The view from the temple was breathtaking. Every throb of pain which we went through during the track was totally worth it. We went for ‘Darshan’ in the evening.

By the time we arrived at the temple the ‘AARTI’ was going on, the chilly air whipped our faces. There was a huge ‘NANDI’ statue located in front of the temple. Diurnal rituals were taking place in the temple. We stayed in a cottage for a night, the stay was comfortable but will not recommend the food of the restaurant.

Time to trek

The next morning we woke up at 6 because if you start your trekking early you will reach temple as early as possible as a result you have to put on multiple layers of clothes and headed out towards the temple, behind the temple were snow cloaked and serene mountains which looked like a dream.  We reached the ‘Garbh Griha’ of the temple and worshipped the majestic deity Lord Shiva and left the sanctum. Also visited the Bheem Shila(the rock that saved the temple during the tragedy of 2013).  The white and barren hills tantalized us. Army helicopters were patrolling the areas because of the Indo-China Border. Snow-covered mountains were all around. We completed our ‘Darshan’ and started trekking our way back down, it took approximately 6 hours. We reached ‘Sonprayag’ in a taxi.
